Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God - The Wrath and Love of the Cross (Romans 1:18, Romans 5:6-11)

Phillip HopwoodPhillip Hopwood, March 20, 2016
Part of the Lent series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

Are we "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God"? Is God going to mercilessly and relentlessly launch all his wrath against sinners and punish them unceasingly?

How does this image square with the God of love?

Romans 1:18

18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; (KJV)

Romans 5:6-11

6For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. 11And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. (KJV)

  2. Paul has been undermined by other teachers of the gospel who contend he is not a very impressive speaker when he is with the Church in Corinth. This sermon addresses what our defense is when an attack comes against us that is rooted in the flesh.
